Safety

Security is an issue at all times and in all places in the world. Saudi Arabia is no exception.

In the past, Saudi security forces and civilians have been killed in attacks, particularly targeting security forces, government buildings, and Shiite institutions. However, the Saudi state makes every effort to minimise this risk. Therefore, do not be surprised if you see heavily armed security personnel, especially in the big cities.

In general, as everywhere else in the world, be especially alert in busy places such as mosques, energy infrastructure facilities and shopping malls.

That being said, I never had a feeling of being unsafe during my visits to Saudi Arabia – in stark contrast to many of the world’s tourist magnets, where such a sense of safety generally does not arise.
