The already exciting gastronomic scene in Riyadh is constantly expanding with new restaurants, eateries and cafés. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that there are around a dozen new openings every month – which does not make it easy to keep track. The city’s restaurant and café scene has experienced a real boom since the opening of the country.
Of course there are branches of the global fast food chains, especially in the malls. But it is not these that are shaping the new development. Rather, it is the restaurants with excellent cuisine and attentive service, exceptional ambience and comfort, some of which come from all over the world and offer international, regional as well as local cuisine at its best – making Food & Drink in Riyadh an experience.
Whether you prefer the regional, more hearty cuisine of Arab countries or exquisite dishes from the cuisines of Italy, France, Japan, Korea, India, Pakistan, Central Asia, China or “just” want to enjoy excellent burgers, fish, vegan food – here you go, there is everything in abundance. From traditional regional to Mediterranean or Saudi fusion cuisine, almost everything can be found. Stuffed lamb, khūzī, is the traditional national dish. Kebabs and shāwarmah, a marinated meat dish of lamb, mutton or chicken grilled on a skewer and served either as an appetiser or a sandwich, are also popular. Makhbūs, a rice dish with fish or crab, is equally popular. Unleavened flatbread is practically part of every meal, as is all kinds of fresh fruit.
Many of the restaurants, cafes are well known for their top quality and authentic food, spicy & strong, nutty & chocolaty, fruity & vibrant coffees, teas, tarts & cakes and the best desserts in town.
A certain trend that can also be observed in Riyadh should not go unmentioned here, according to which huge, stylish places with cafés and restaurants have recently sprung up in various locations or districts in completely new development zones, some of which are called terraces, hubs, quarters, plazas, etc.. Here, one café, one restaurant follows another, inviting people to linger and eat. So although the restaurants and cafés are certainly spread all over the city, a certain trend or concentration of them in these new zones can be detected. Many of them are concentrated in the newly built centres because these new centres automatically attract many visitors and because the necessary latest infrastructure is available. So you should always find something there that suits your taste. Therefore, some of them are listed below.
A recently opened centre is Via Riyadh. This centre only opened in May 2023 and offers foodies a wealth of options with over 20 restaurants and cafes setting up shop in the Saudi capital – plus a five-star hotel, luxury shopping and cinema halls. You’ll find them all listed at www.viariyadh.com – so the choice is yours. Viariyadh is south of the Diplomatic Quarter just across Highway 40. View Map

Bujairi Terrace
As mentioned, one way to experience the cultural fusion of Riyadh is through its cuisine. Another example of this is the recently opened (December 2022) Bujairi Terrace, which is very close to Diriyah Gate and Ad Diriyah – The City of Earth. It is beautifully situated, reflecting the typical Najd style, overlooking historic Ad Diriyah and housing more than 20 new restaurants and cafés in an area of around 15 000 m2, forming another mosaic of luxurious feelings. The restaurants, furnished and decorated with Najd-style elements, create a traditional ambience that combines food and heritage. Authentic recipes such as Kabsa, Jareesh and Hashi are usually served in a setting that is ideal for sharing a meal. Boulevard Riyadh
Another area with nice cafés and restaurants is Boulevard Riyadh, which opened in 2016 and is an 89-acre open entertainment complex in the Hittin district west of the King Abdullah Financial District, which is especially busy during the annual Riyadh Season entertainment festival. This district hub is dedicated to contemporary outdoor living and lifestyle and overlooks the dancing fountain, which is the largest in Riyadh, in a man-made lake of about 35,000 m2. Whether you’re looking for a formal fine dining experience or a quick coffee and snack, the boulevard has it all: a mix of international and local restaurants, cafés and grocery shops.Address: Prince Turki ibn Abdulaziz Al Awwal Rd / Prince Mohammad ibn Salman ibn Abdulaziz Rd intersection. https://theboulevard.com.sa; https://goo.gl/maps/pChwypC9unoMVspm7
The Backyard is another area worth mentioning.
In addition, there are numerous unbranded cafés that try to stand out from conventional providers by offering their own coffee or patisserie creations or special features. Saudi Arabia is becoming the “powerhouse” in the Middle East coffee shop market and chains such as Barn’s, Nejoud, Bateel or boutique cafés like THAT are increasingly offering Saudi grown and roasted speciality coffees alongside classic coffee compositions.
