Taif is both a city and a governorate of the same name in the Province of Mecca. The name is often also spelled ‘Ta’if’. The city has a population of around 563,000 (2022). Although it is somewhat in the shadow of its better-known neighbouring cities, Jeddah and Mecca, it has its own traditional yet modern charm, which is attracting an increasing number of foreign tourists. Taif and its surroundings are perfect places to unwind and reconnect with nature.
The city lies at an altitude of around 1,700 m on a plain bordered to the west by the Hejaz Mountains, which merge into the more southerly Sarawat Mountains in this region. Due to its geographical location, Taif (and its surroundings) is referred to as the ‘unofficial summer capital’ of Saudi Arabia and as the best summer destination, as it enjoys a temperate climate in summer, unlike most parts of the Arabian Peninsula. This contributes to roses flourishing magnificently in the area, which has earned Taif the title of the ‘City of Roses‘.
The city also owes its popularity with tourists to its holiday resorts of Al Hada and Ash Shafa in the nearby mountains. It is connected to the nearby Al Hada via the famous section of Highway 15 (Taif-Al Hada Road).
