Vessel Hole Rock – Al Ula

two monumental rocks propping each other up

Equally impressive, though perhaps less well-known, is Vessel Hole Rock, situated not far from Elephant Rock. The elongated sandstone rock has a mesa-shaped top, which is clearly formed from two rocks that brace against each other. The two rocks each have a kind of supporting shoulder, which stabilise each other by forming a vertical crevice. One of the two rocks has already sagged at the crevice, causing the underlying rock material to collapse over time.

This has resulted in an impressive opening (‘hole’) in the overall formation of the sandstone on a hill, through which you have a spectacular view of the landscape with the so-called Twin Rocks on the other side and into the distance.
