Dammam – Marjan Island

potential not fully leveraged

Passing the Dolphin Village, a typical amusement park with a large aquarium, sea lion and dolphin pools, you will reach Marjan Island, which is a 315 m x 250 m (1,033 ft x 820 ft) artificial island at the northwest end of Dammam Bay in the Al Hamra’a district that was filled in 1991. It is also referred to as Coral Island. The drive on Corniche Road passes Dolphin Village and leads directly to the island on a dam-like arch. The island is from the afternoon hours also the starting point of small boat tours. Sea Star Ship offers half-hour tours from Marjan Island along the corniche to the waterfront of King Abdullah Park. The tour costs about SAR 64.00 per adult and half for children. Timely booking is recommended in many cases. The island’s landmark is the Fanar Tower, a helical tower, whose height is reported to be about 30 m and whose restoration was sponsored by ARAMCO in 2003. Unfortunately, when we visited in October 2022, the island made a poorly maintained impression. It would clearly have “more potential”.
