Al Ula and its region “thrive” on its exceptional, striking, unique landscape, shaped over millions of years. Can man – one might ask – add anything worth mentioning, outstanding, effectful, emphasising or even competing to this jewel? With the exception of the competitive aspect, the other characteristics mentioned could be affirmed – in my opinion.
The daring mirror-covered Maraya building cladย withย thousandsย ofย mirror panels is an example of this. The Arabic “Maraya” says it all, as it stands for “reflection” and “mirror”. It is presumably intended to do more than reflecting the dream-like landscape only, of which it has becomeย integral.
It is located in the Ashar Valley about 11 km (6.8 mi) north of the intersection of State Roads 375 and 70. This architectural hype is also a cultural hotspot. The building is designed as a multi-purpose venue. It is intended to establish itself as one of the centres of the cultural scene in Al Ula, where world stars, regional singers, ballet and theatre ensembles, orchestras and artists can perform their music, dance and plays or exhibit their works.
