After visiting the Mosque, head back to the pedestrian zone and continue eastward along it, crossing Al Imam Abdullah ibn Faisal ibn Turki St. until you reach the multi-lane King Abdulaziz Rd. The pedestrian zone was created as part of the modernisation of the town, which accompanied the construction of the railway line at the beginning of the 20th century (see more on this below in the sect. on the Hejaz Railway Museum). You will then find yourself in the Tawaheen Souq area. Despite this modernisation and standardisation, they are fortunately still there – the small craft businesses that refine raw materials in the traditional way or produce goods that are associated with times long past. The Tawaheen Souq exudes the best atmosphere in the early evening.
