Tomb of Lihyan, Son of Kuza – Hegra (Al Ula)

featuring a Nabataean "stairway to heaven"

This is one of the most magnificent and mysterious monumental tombs in Hegra, also called Qasr Al Farid. It is the largest (single) tomb of Hegra – that of Lihyan, the son of Kuza – about 22 metres high, but unfinished. This tomb differs from the other tombs in that it is the one and only tomb carved into a solitary rock. As with other tombs, Lihyan’s tomb also features a Nabataean stairway to heaven“, consisting of two groups of five steps, arranged in the uppermost part of the façade and waiting for the soul of the buried person to ascend to heaven.
