The Province of Al Bahah is located roughly in the centre between the metropolitan region of Jeddah / Mecca / Taif in the west and the regional centre of Abha / Khamis Mushait in the south-west of the country, not far from the Yemeni border. With Asir, Najran and Jizan, Al Bahah forms the south-western provinces of Saudi Arabia. This part of the country is known for the highlands in all its provinces and includes fertile areas with coastal mountains. The entire area receives more rainfall than the rest of the country, as the country’s highest peaks are located here. Some of them reach over 3,000 m (9,800 ft). Their geographical vicinity to Yemen alone suggests that the inhabitants of the four provinces, their way of life, their buildings, their cuisine, their traditional clothing and much more are influenced by Yemen.
The municipality is surrounded by many forests, including: Raghadan Forest, Al Shahba Forest, Dar Al-Jabal and Zarqa. Located in the Sarat region, the hilly city has an altitude of about 2,150 m (and more) above sea level.
The region is well known for its beekeeping. It is said that the honey from the region is among the best in the world. Accordingly, an annual honey festival is held in the town. The cultivation and roasting of coffee beans is also becoming increasingly important. Its coffee beans (Coffea arabica) grow on bushes in mountainous areas with moderately cool weather. The beans are roasted to a lighter colour than the coffee beans commonly found in Europe. They are used together with spices such as cardamom to make delicious Saudi coffee.
